Compass : An idol to whom ?
Compass : good exemplars to whom the pupils refer inadvertently
The date 16th of May has been chosen as Teachers’ Day because it was during this date in 1956 that the Federal Legislative Council gave its approval for the proposals in the Education Committee Report to be endorsed as the national education policy of this country. The document is also known as the Razak Report and has since been the National Education Policy.
Teachers at Malay School in 1960
It was in the year 1972 when it was first introduced in this country with several objectives which include to emphasize on teachers’ role in nation building (including integration and unity), national development and community service and to draw the attention of parents, students and the public to the pertinent role of teachers in our Malaysian community. Besides , it aims to foster the feelings of professional unity and goodwill amongst teachers together to enhance the teaching profession and stature in the community. It does provide the opportunities for teachers to further develop their competence through seminars, conferences and other similar meetings organized for Teachers’ Day.
In 1994, UNESCO proclaimed 5 October World Teachers’ Day, in celebration of the great step made for teachers in 1966 when a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris in cooperation with the ILO adopted the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
UNESCO proclaimed 5 October is World Teachers’ Day
This recommendation sets forth the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and international standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions. It also contains many recommendations for teachers’ participation in educational decisions through consultation and negotiation with educational authorities. Since its adoption, the Recommendation has been considered an important set of guidelines to promote teachers’ status in the interest of quality education
Teachers can be defined as a compass that activates the magnet of curiosity and wisdom of pupil. Often resembled in many ways . A light that consumes itself to light the way for the other . Truth be told , the best teacher is experience. But an experienced teacher is a bliss .
Who else can be defined as a teacher ?
The first teacher we were bestowed with is our parents , the reason why we are now breathing the air around , they are the one who at the first hand teach us from the day we were born till the day we are able to distinguish the good and the bad point of certain event that occurs around us . They are the one who are willing to set themselves in trouble for their children sake , through the thin and thickest moment of their life. Never once they forget to pray for our happiness even though our marriage was set and the job was already in the grip .
“And Say My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up (when I was) small,” Qur’an 17 : 24
They can be regarded as a teacher informally and therefore , it is our obligation and responsibility as a child to pray for them here and hereafter , either they are still alive or they had passed away.
The ones in the second place are our primary and secondary school teachers and those we met officially when we were placed in any learning institution . From zero to hero we was taught how to count from the simplest 123 , to spell from the easiest ABC until we are able to read the complex stuff . As for academically genius students, their talent will be continuously polished aiming to let them shine in the future .
But for the slow achievers , they will never be left behind and will be further trained as hard as they can in order to grab success as high as the other student with their own speciality in any other courses . They will be trained to show and convince people that they are able to fulfill the demands in the market in order to be employed.
From zero to hero we was taught!
Train yourself to show them gratitude in your own way for what they had sacrificed. Think of their family who had limited bonding moments with them. Think of the efforts they made to increase your performance in class, regardless of their health and rest.
Imam Ja’far Sadiq, (A.S.), says:
“Your teacher enjoys the right over you that you should honour him and pay him respect in different assemblies. You should be very attentive to his words. You should not raise your voice above his. If anybody asks him a question you should not give a reply there to. You should not converse with others in his presence and you should allow the people to benefit from his knowledge. You should not speak ill of anyone before him. If anybody speaks ill of him in your presence you should defend him. You should conceal his shortcomings and bring his virtues to light. You should not associate with his enemies and should not dispute with his friends.
If you act on these lines the angels of Allah will testify that you have paid attention to him and have acquired knowledge for the sake of Allah and not to attract the attention of the people. And the right of your pupils on you is that you should realise that in granting you knowledge and opening its path for you, Allah has appointed you to be their guardian. In case, therefore you teach them properly and do not frighten them and are not furious with them Allah will, through His kindness, increase your knowledge.
But if you drive the people away from knowledge and as and when they approach you for it you frighten them and get annoyed with them it will be only appropriate that Almighty Allah may take away the light of knowledge from you and may degrade you in the eyes of the people”.
(Makarimul Akhlaq, p.484)
Let us spend five second to think ,
If today , have we pray for their health ?
If today , have we pay our tribute for their kind deeds ?
if today , we have practice what we were told to do?
Their contribution is something huge . The reason why you are able read this article . It may influence your life too as if they were your role model in the past , a mentor whom exhibits leadership in multiple , sometimes overlapping ways .
“whoever is given wisdom and knowledge is blessed with bounties in good abundance “AL-BAQARAH , 272
“ALLAH elevates to high position those from amongst you who are faithful and those who have acquired knowledge .”AL-MUJADALAH ,11
Their high position was already mentioned in the holy Al -Quran .Do believe that it is impossible for every living humankind never to receive any single assist from a teacher . It could be either informally or formally . Don’t bother yourself with how many times you were put under detention upon your wrongdoings , think of the benefits you gain throughout your life . A word from your teachers , then the practice you did , the benefits continue till the hereafter .
Today’s doctor , engineer , architect , scientist and even if he is a prime minister, if the history is meant to be revealed those man starting point is a teacher who never give up to raise them up feeding them with knowledge until they possess the skills needed to turn their dreams into reality.
The third teacher is what we read in our lifetime .
“Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not”
[Quran, 96: 1-5]
In this era , where the internet becomes a source that provides us with all kinds of information we need, we should be able to choose the good literary kind of books , articles , news or magazines prior to their quality . Reading them thoroughly should open up our mind that it doesn’t matter not to agree to a certain degree with the written idea. Whatever enlivens the goodness and enhance its growth should be taken as our guide to lead for a better tomorrow so as a tribute for an artwork .
And last but not least , it was our own self . We were bestowed with ability to differentiate things . In advance He blessed us with heart which can sense the goodness and badness off something which appear to take place .
In Islam , the priority to shield the purity of mind and heart was being placed as a paramount important thing to be taken care of because of both of them will guide us to a straight path to the heaven . Appreciate them both. The term to appreciate seems to contain a similar meaning with the word respect . We live in an era where we can easily spot people who love to get appreciated but they themselves can’t simply appreciate others . Insist to be appreciated but forget to respect . Love to be praised but to praise others is hard on them likewise a lump got stuck in their throat . It is a norm nowadays .
Teaching profession is of no doubt a challenging one especially when they have to deal with people of different manners , different perspective but at the same time the interaction must go on. If it was rooted with the pure intention to create the next caliph , a reliable one to rule the whole world then there is no other word to say than true patience is grounded with wisdom and compassion.
Kudos for the teacher for your charisma and dedication.Through your tireless effort, they not only acquire the wisdom of knowledge but also become more wholesome in character. You are indeed the catalysts of transformation.
1387.Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated :
The Prophet (PBUH) SAID , “ The superiority of the learned over the devout worshipper is like my superiority over the most inferior amongst you (in good deeds)” He went on to say “ Allah , His angels , the dwellers and the Heaven and earth , and even the ant in ts hole and the fish (in water)supplicate in favour of those who teach people knowledge’’
Happy Teacher’s Day !
The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth.
